Book Your Fall Family Photos Now: What You Need to Know

If you are reading this in August, you are right on time. If you are reading it in September, you might be cutting it close. Here is what you need to know about booking fall family portraits in the Salt Lake Valley.

Why fall fills first

Golden hour in September and October produces the best light of the year for family portraits. The scrub oak turns rust and burgundy on the foothill bench. The cottonwoods go yellow along the river corridors. The whole valley looks like it was lit on purpose for about six weeks.

Every family photographer in the valley knows this. So do families. The result is that fall golden hour slots fill faster than any other time of year, often by late August for the most requested dates.

What late means in practice

Early October Saturdays at golden hour go first. Then the surrounding weekdays. By mid-September, most photographers with limited calendars have their October full and are booking into November.

November is still beautiful. The color is gone but the light stays warm and the locations open up because the crowds thin out. If October does not work, November is worth considering rather than waiting until next year.

What to do right now

Reach out before you have everything figured out. You do not need to know exactly what dates work, exactly where you want to shoot, or exactly what your family will wear. That is what the intro call is for.

The call takes fifteen minutes. We talk about your family, your timeline, and whether there is still a slot that works. If there is, we plan from there. If there is not, I will be honest about that too and we can talk about what other options look like.

What the experience looks like

A Smyer Image session starts with planning and ends with an in-home reveal where your portraits are projected onto your own walls before anything gets printed. The session fee is $525 and covers everything through the reveal. Most families invest between $500 and $2,000 in artwork chosen at the reveal.

Fall sessions book quickly because the experience is worth planning for. Families who have been through a reveal tend to come back the following year, which means slots go to returning families and new inquiries at the same time.

The version of your family that exists right now

This fall is specific. Your kids at these ages, your family in this configuration, this particular October with this particular light. That does not repeat.

The session you book this month captures it. The session you mean to book next year captures something different.

If fall matters to your family this year, now is the time to reach out.
