Family Photography Prices in Utah: What to Expect

Most photographers in Utah don't publish their prices. You fill out a contact form, wait two days, get on a call, and find out the number at the end of it. That's not how I work, and it's not how you should have to make this decision.

Here's what family photography actually costs in Utah, across different models, so you know what you're comparing before you reach out to anyone.

The mini session model, $50 to $250

Twenty minutes, a set location shared with multiple families, a small gallery of edited images. You get files, usually ten to twenty, and you print them yourself or don't.

Mini sessions are fine for what they are. They're not fine when you want something on your wall. The time isn't there, the location isn't chosen for your family, and the end product is a gallery link you'll mean to use.

The standard session model, $300 to $800

An hour or two, a location of your choice or theirs, a larger gallery of edited files. Sometimes prints are available as add-ons, sometimes not. The experience varies widely at this price point depending on the photographer.

You get more than a mini session. You still usually end up with files and a vague plan to print someday.

The boutique model, $500 and up for the session

This is where the experience changes. A boutique session isn't just longer, it's designed differently. Location is chosen for your family specifically. The session is planned around your home and your walls. And the end product isn't a gallery link, it's artwork.

At Smyer Image, the session fee is $525. That covers planning, the session itself, a printed keepsake box of 4x6 photographs, and an in-home reveal where your portraits are projected onto your actual walls before anything gets printed. Most families invest between $500 and $2,000 in artwork after the reveal.

What you're actually comparing

The price difference between models looks bigger than it is when you account for the end product.

A $150 mini session plus $200 in prints you eventually order plus the time you spend figuring all of that out is not cheaper than a session where the artwork gets designed in your living room and delivered. It's just spread out differently, with more friction and less certainty.

The real question isn't what the session costs. It's what you end up with.
